I Couldn’t Run.

— How Yoshitada Nishiwaki Chose People Over Profit, and Rebuilt NEWWEST on Trust

There is always someone else in Yoshitada Nishiwaki’s story.

The people who expected something of him. The people who believed him. The people who moved because he asked them to.

So when a business he had brought others into fell apart, the first thing that surfaced in his mind wasn’t a number.

It was faces.

Bankruptcy would have closed the matter legally. It would not have closed it.

I’ll go and see them. One at a time.

That was the decision. Where a person finds that kind of resolve is a fair question — and following it leads to a single character he has lived by all along.

Jin.

💎 A boy who couldn’t let things slide

Nishiwaki laughs when he describes his younger self. Trouble, mostly.

But underneath the mischief was something harder to laugh off: he couldn’t walk past anything that struck him as unfair. Even as a child, it bothered him in a way he couldn’t put down.

In fifth grade he transferred to a new school and found himself among children from backgrounds nothing like his own. Without noticing, he began learning the thing that would define the rest of his life — how to read people, and how to hold his own ground while doing it.

He never wanted the spotlight. Yet he kept ending up as team captain, class representative, student council.

“I never once put myself forward,” he says.

The reason others chose him hasn’t changed since.

He took responsibility, and people could feel it.

💎 The boy who assumed his life would be ordinary

He never set out to run a company.

His father was a salaryman. His mother took in piecework at home. Money was not plentiful. His older brother was the academic one.

So Nishiwaki assumed the obvious: he would live an ordinary life.

There was one story he never liked as a child. The Ugly Duckling.

Everyone celebrates the ending, when the duckling turns out to be a swan.

“But I wasn’t a swan,” he says. “I was a duck, and ducks stay ducks.”

Some classmates came from families that owned businesses, and talked easily about taking over one day. That world sat somewhere far off.

He chose his university because it was near home. He chose his first job for much the same reason.

No grand ambition. Just one rule: wherever he was placed, he would do the work properly.

That was enough to earn him Rookie of the Year at Toyota.

💎 He didn’t want to win alone

He was good at sales, and the results came.

Then one day he heard the company’s top performer explain how it was done. To be number one, you outperformed everyone — including the colleagues sitting beside you.

Nishiwaki listened, and felt nothing he wanted to move toward.

This isn’t the kind of success I’m after.

Around that time he encountered network marketing, and with it a completely different premise. You didn’t climb over people. You backed them, and when they succeeded, it came back to you.

Not one person winning. Everyone rising.

That logic caught him. He left the company and gave himself to it entirely — and built an organization of nearly six hundred people.

Then he found something in the product explanation that wasn’t accurate.

He had two options. Say nothing and keep succeeding, or walk.

He dissolved the organization he had spent years building. His income went to zero overnight.

He could live with the loss. He couldn’t live with the lie.

💎 Some things cost more than money

Other ventures followed, and he built large organizations again.

Then came a familiar shape. In one business, the structure shifted so that his own profit came at the expense of the people around him.

Take what’s offered, he was told. That’s how business works.

He turned the position down.

“I never wanted to make money by selling out the people beside me.”

It cost him significant income. It also settled the question of what kind of businessman he intended to be.

That answer would be tested far harder than he could have imagined.

💎 The collapse

The turning point of his life began with a project he believed would make communities safer — a way of using existing local infrastructure to protect children and neighborhoods.

He believed in the purpose. Many people were involved, and it drew public attention.

Convinced it would do real good, he brought it to the people he knew and trusted. Together they put in more than ¥100 million.

Then the project stopped moving.

The unease came slowly. Why the delays? Where had the money gone?

Nishiwaki kept asking until he got an answer he could accept. The answers stayed vague.

And the more he asked, the more his presence became inconvenient. Eventually he was pushed out of the project entirely.

He couldn’t make sense of what was happening. He had joined believing it would help people.

Then he saw himself on television, presented as though he were at the center of the problem.

He was, in fact, among those harmed.

But that wasn’t what he thought about.

He thought about the people who had handed over money they cared about, for one reason: because it was Nishiwaki asking.

Being hurt himself was bearable. Having pulled them in was not.

💎 “Before anything else — I need to face them”

The scale of it was crushing. He had a family. There were nights he considered whether a life insurance payout was the only way to make people whole.

Then a different resolve took its place.

Explain what happened. Bow his head. Say the one thing he could still promise.

I will work, and I will pay it back.

Disappearing was never on the list.

He went to them one by one. Some were furious. Some meetings were frightening. He kept going anyway.

“Sales is the one thing I know I can do. I’ll repay you.”

Slowly, people started believing him. They helped him find work. He sold, he connected people, he built something back from nothing.

Over roughly four and a half years, he resolved almost all of it.

When he looks back, he rarely mentions the amount.

He talks about the people.

💎 People betray you. People also save you

An experience like that could easily leave a person cynical.

It did the opposite.

Yes, he had been let down. But others refused to judge him by the headlines.

“We’re not backing your past. We’re backing who you are now.”

Those people became the foundation of his second start. Introductions turned into work. Work turned into relationships. Trust rebuilt what money never could.

It was in that period that he came across the field of international wealth planning.

For a man who had watched money tear relationships apart, the work meant something specific. Not simply growing assets — reducing what people have to fear, and protecting the ones they love.

He had seen exactly what he wanted to prevent.

This time, he wanted to be on the side that protects.

💎 NEWWEST, built out of gratitude

That is where NEWWEST began.

Today the company supports people’s long-term financial planning through international wealth planning and insurance. But the point was never accumulation.

It was peace of mind.

“We treat everyone we work with as family, and keep contributing to that family.”

For most companies, that would be a line on a website. For Nishiwaki, it’s a debt being repaid — to every person who chose to stand by him when there was nothing in it for them.

💎 Because he was saved, he gives it back

He has since been able to repay one of the people who once carried him, in a way that mattered.

Saved by people, he returns it to people.

What he receives, he doesn’t let stop with him. A kindness taken from one person gets handed to the next.

That circulation is the shape of his life.

What he’s working on now is different from anything before: raising people.

For years he generated the revenue alone and carried the responsibility alone. That’s exactly why he wants to build a company that moves forward together.

NEWWEST stands on relationships and trust. It couldn’t stand on anything else.

💎 What he’d give a child: time

Asked what he would do with a day spent among schoolchildren, his answer had nothing to do with money or business.

Time with their parents.

The fifteen minutes walking his son to school. Playing badminton together.

Children grow, and the window for holding a small hand closes.

“That time never comes back.”

Which is why he refuses to postpone it. And why the company’s philosophy reads the way it does.

💎 If his life were a film: Jin

At the end of the interview, the usual question.

If your life were a single film, what would the title be?

The answer was one character.

Jin.

Compassion. Obligation honored. The bond between people.

He lost money. He lost businesses. He was deceived.

He never stopped believing in people.

Don’t betray anyone. Repay what you’re given. Live by the connections you’ve been entrusted with.

The life of Yoshitada Nishiwaki comes down to that single character.

And that jin will go on connecting one person to the next.
